Turning the information districts already have into coordinated action that improves student success


1.  The Student Data Paradox

Over the past decade, school districts have invested heavily in systems that generate an extraordinary volume of information about students. A modern district can describe, at almost any moment, how a student performed on the last benchmark assessment, how many days of school they have missed, how many behavior referrals they have received, how they answered a school-climate survey, and which supports have already been tried. Academic performance, assessments, attendance, behavior, engagement, climate, and readiness — the information exists.


The difficulty is that it rarely exists in one place. Assessment data lives in the assessment platform. Attendance and grades live in the student information system. Behavior lives in another application. Climate and wellbeing information lives in a survey tool. Intervention notes live somewhere else again. Each system was purchased to do one job well, and most of them do. But a learner does not experience their education in separate applications, and neither should the educators responsible for that learner.

Consider a student whose attendance begins to slip in the same weeks that grades decline and classroom engagement changes. Each of those signals is real, but they live in separate systems and are often seen by different people — the attendance clerk, the teacher, the counselor. No one sees the pattern as a whole in time to act on it early.


This is the paradox at the center of district data strategy today. For many districts, the problem is no longer access to data — they already have more information than they can readily turn into action.
